The main character in my book was Mark Sway. Mark Sway is a naughty eleven-year-old boy with a huge burden on his hands. Mark smokes cigarettes, uses vulgar language and picks on his little brother Ricky. Mark grew up in a trailer, with an abusive father, a mother who is rarely around, and his little brother Ricky who annoys him greatly. Mark was a very strong character who didn't take anything from anyone! The problems Mark had with Jerome Clifford only made him stronger. All he cared about was protecting his little brother and his mother. Jerome Clifford was a robust man, who was trying to commit suicide, because of a dangerous secret he knew. Mark and his younger brother Ricky came across Jerome one day as he was trying to commit suicide. Jerome revealed the dangerous secret to Mark, which made Mark one of the mob's major targets. Mark was abused and neglected, but as soon as people found out that Mark knew this dangerous secret, everyone wanted a piece of him. Mark knew he was in trouble, so he didn't do it! The only thing he knew was possible was finding a lawyer. The lawyers name was Reggie Love, a woman. At first Mark despised Reggie, knowing that a woman couldn't meet his needs like a man could. Then something happened where Reggie grew up with him, he also got more used to her, and he found himself telling her personal things, spending a lot of time with her, and starting to care about her. She was like the mother figure he never had. Mark and Reggie were together in the tangle of confusion. Mark realized throughout the ordeal that he couldn't do everything on his own, he also realized how vulnerable he was being independent. Mark and Reggie became best friends, up until the point where he had to leave the witness protection program. I liked the way Mark was so rambunctious and uncontrollable. He was so young, yet so intelligent and mature. He knew how to protect himself and he knew the importance of his family and friends, and how important it was to protect them. No matter what the mob did to Mark, he made sure his family was safe first, then he took care of himself. I couldn't find anything I didn't like about Mark, ultimately I didn't like how he had to move into the witness protection program.
