Around the world, millions of people need the help of others. They need people to help them provide money, food, time or care. This need could be on a smaller scale even with something as simple as needing to have someone who is kind. When people help someone in the community, no matter how small or whether they are part of a group or not, it is a community service. Community service isn't just about the large organizations that run operations, it's about volunteers and those who need help. Community service will help both the intended recipient and those who volunteer because donating time, effort, or material goods to others has been proven to contribute to happiness. This free service performed by ordinary people helps non-profit organizations by allowing the money earned to go to those in need rather than to those managing the project. The morale of entire communities has also been seen to increase with intense local community service. Connection to Happiness According to Howard C. Cutler's The Art of Happiness, when people see people who are in a worse position than them, they become more satisfied in life (23). This is true at multiple levels of life, from those already below seeing someone even lower or someone above noticing someone else above but not as advanced. Action for Happiness also states that studies have shown that giving to others increases happiness more than receiving a gift from others, despite the size of the gift. The group states that “…participants who were given $5 or $20 to spend on others or to donate to charity experienced greater happiness than people who were given the same amount to spend on themselves . Interestingly, the amount of money did not influence the level of happiness ge...... middle of paper ......anel." Econstor. Feb. 2005.
