Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on grounds of race, age or sex. In today's society, men are discriminated against through the media, they face discrimination for parental custody, they face discrimination in courtrooms and even for career choices. BBC journalist David Benatar stated that “the second sexism is that around the world men are more likely to be drafted into the army, be victims of violence, lose custody of their children and take their own lives” (Castella, 2012). The way men are portrayed on television and in movies also plays a big role in how they are treated in real-life situations. The most common and subtle form of discrimination that men have to deal with is stereotypes in the media. In the media, men are portrayed as aggressive, angry athletes, businessmen with no morals, and lazy, terrible fathers. When men are portrayed so negatively right before people's eyes, the way all men are viewed and treated will also be negatively affected. When all people see of men are forceful, aggressive people who “compromise their long-term health to fight when necessary” (Children Now, 1999), it begins to distort the image of men. This portrayal makes men seem like creatures who are only interested in showing off their strength and avoiding appearing feminine at all costs. Some “admirable” portrayals of men in the media can also be a little destructive. Most films and television programs feature the great businessman who is "the epitome of success, embodying the characteristics and acquiring the assets that society deems valuable" (Children Now, 1999). This depiction of me... in the middle of paper ......This statistic further reinforces the belief that males should not or cannot teach young children Men continue to shy away from jobs considered "feminine," especially because media continues to make it seem like they will be. less than a man if they choose careers dominated by women. In conclusion, male discrimination has become a very subtle but more prevalent part of today's society and does not receive the attention it deserves. People need to realize the rights of men need the same attention as women. Men are portrayed terribly in the media, are not given a fair chance to receive custody of their children, are treated unfairly by today's justice system, and are sometimes even mocked for their career choice. If gender equality is to be achieved, male discrimination must be taken as seriously as sexism against women.
