Topic > Advantages and Disadvantages of Discourse Ethics

Task 1 – Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of deontology and discourse ethics (Fisher, Lovell, and Valero-Silva, Chapter 3). Use these approaches to evaluate how they might be used by the manager in making a decision whether BASF should proceed with construction of the factory at Beaufort Country Park. Business ethics? Business ethics is a moral principle that distinguishes right from wrong and helps determine an individual's action and guide how a company behaves. The Oxford Dictionary of Economics' definition of business ethics defines it as "the study of what standards businesses should observe in their dealings in addition to complying with the letter of the law." From this it can be assumed that following the law, although a basic starting point, may not be sufficient to behave ethically but may require giving up some business interests. Companies seek to meet this demand by defining their core values and standards in their statement of corporate principles. In addition to this, many companies have created voluntary codes of conduct that regulate practices in their industry sector. These codes are developed in consultation with governments, employees, local communities and other stakeholders. Businesses have the greatest opportunity to transform people's lives and build the springboard to eradicate poverty by generating economic growth. All businesses need to make a profit and it must be recognized that this objective must be taken into consideration from an ethical perspective. A company, therefore, must remain attuned to the desires of the societies it serves, otherwise it runs the risk of alienating its shareholders/stakeholders and customers. This would be bad for business, as it could reduce growth and the powerful… middle of paper… requires and is considered the highest moral principle or categorical imperative. Kant believed that failing in this sense deemed the action immoral. From an ethical perspective, the BASF manager in Scenario 1 should not proceed with the construction of the factory at Beaufort Country Park as a manager and, by extension, the company would not behave ethically. That said, it would be possible to use discourse ethics to communicate with developers to try to reach common ground, which is ethical. Perhaps, the ideal situation would be to have an open dialogue between Beaufort County communities, including potential workers, the governor of Southern California, and the "Hilton Head" developers, as well as their frequent visitors. Through open and honest discussion, could there be a possibility for the BASF plant to open on the coast of South Carolina? References
