Topic > The 15-Minute Family Interview - 3056

Kaakinen, Gedaly-Duff, Coehlo & Hanson, (2010) report that the family is the greatest resource for managing care for people with chronic illnesses; family members are the main caregivers and guarantee the necessary continuity of care. Therefore, it is important for healthcare providers to develop models of care based on an understanding of what families are going through (Eggenberger, Meiers, Krumwiede, Bliesmer, & Earle, 2011). The family I chose to interview is in the midst of a transition in family dynamics. I used the family as a systems approach and as a structure-function theoretical framework for the effects of changes in dynamic function. Additionally, combinations of the genogram, ecomap, adaptations of Friedman's family assessment model, and Wright & Leahey's 15-minute family interview were used. The 15-minute family interview includes the five key steps of applying good manners, setting up a therapeutic conversation with a family, completing a genogram and ecomap, asking several therapeutic questions, and offering praise (Wright & Leahey, 1999). Along with several components of the 15-minute interview, the Friedman Family Assessment Model explains family type, cultural background, religion, social class status, and social class mobility. The genogram, ecomap and interview guide created for this task are included in this document as Appendix A, Appendix B and Appendix C respectively. The purpose of this interview was discussed with the family, i.e. how the data would be used to discuss family experiences for a family and social nursing assignment for nurses at the state university. Most importantly, I told the family that I hoped to provide them with interventions and support for… halfway through the paper… the context of chronic illness: a family health promotion process.
