The Future of South Africa Some things in South Africa are getting better as we move into the future, while others are getting worse. The governance in South Africa is better. All the provisions of the new constitution were in force from the year 1999. In June 1999, the term of President Nelson Mandela ended and Thabo Mbeki was elected president. There has been a peaceful change in the government and Mbeki is doing many things to help the country. Some of these include eliminating racial hatred, ending poverty, and reducing violent crime. The government is also electing more people of different races and genders into the National Assembly and Cabinet. South Africa's economy is the best of all African countries and is expected to continue to improve. South Africa's economy depends mainly on mineral resources which it exports to many other countries. The South African government has invested in many other sectors, such as tourism and wine, which represent important and fast-growing sectors of the economy. The government is also encouraging businesses to hire more blacks and people of color (a term used in South Africa to identify people of mixed heritage) as they have the highest unemployment rate of any ethnic group in the country. South Africa has many plans for an "industrial renaissance", is using many more of the country's natural resources and is trying to strengthen its ties with the rest of the world....
