Topic > A comparison of Percy Shelley's Ozymandias and Suddan...

Compare and contrast Ozymandias and Saddam Hussein. The poem, written by Percy Shelley, Ozymandias is a Petrarchan sonnet compared to the second article labeled 'Symbolic in more ways than one' is actually a news article. This is shown through the piece as it contains a date "Thursday 10th April 2003", structure and content, the content is more modern so the audience knows that when the topic is addressed, it will be serious rather than funny. Ozymandias is a sonnet (a 14-line poem), although it does not have the same simple rhyme or punctuation scheme as most sonnets. Some lines are divided by periods and the rhyme is sometimes irregular. It is written in iambic pentameter, which Shakespeare used extensively in his plays and sonnets. The first line and a half up to the colon are the words of the narrator, the rest are those of the traveler he meets. There are no clear stanzas as such. Instead, it is a 14-line block of text divided up with lots of punctuation. Although it does not have an easy and memorable rhyme scheme, the poem is powerful when read aloud. The ends of lines one and three rhyme ("earth/sand"), but so do the first and last words of line three ("stand/sand"), which gives it extra power. Lines 12 and 14 also rhyme, and words like ("decay / away") mean that the poem ends with a feeling of mystery and emptiness. The use of iambic pentameter makes it have a regular sound. Both pieces are symbolic of power, of how it can be destroyed over time, slowly crumbling rather than being incinerated, like a statue. This is to show that all power is soon destroyed over time, some by force faster as they are emotional to some people, in Saddam's case, people who wish to take revenge because he is dead. Also... half the card... the hat's power slowly fades over time until it becomes someone's legacy. They all give different connotations which all have a negative impact on the reader, “decaying and lifeless” give ideas of something dead, like a rotting corpse; 'naked and ancient' gives the connotation that it has become so old and naked, it contains no power or trace of Rameses and finally 'wreck, shattered and crumpled' gives the connotation that the statue representing Rameses' power has withered and transformed in a box of fossilized bones. So overall, both pieces represent that power, once obtained, only has meaning when the person is alive and well and using it, but these are its limits. It never exceeds their lifespan as people's true opinions are shown and their legacy is soon forgotten. Both use different time points that have a connection to convey the same message to the audience.
