Morals and values are something that every individual can uphold in life. So similar to these, are professional organizations, especially those operating in the human services sector. These moral values, also called professional ethics, are accompanied by codes of conduct. Codes of conduct are rules and regulations established to help avoid conflict and adversity within professional environments. These rules and regulations are also established to help maintain the safety and well-being of both professionals and clients. However, while there are many different fields within the human services field, this provides the opportunity for numerous professional associations to be available within our society. As someone who is passionate about helping others in times of adversity and advocating for diversity/equality, the American Counseling Association code of ethics is what I would adhere to within the aforementioned professional environment. The American Counseling Association (ACA) ) is the world's largest professional association founded in 1952. The ACA emphasizes the growth and improvement of the counseling profession headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. However, their code of ethics was only adopted in 1963; eleven years into their existence. Since then, their code of ethics has been revised twice due to changes in our society and other social justice issues. Its latest revision became effective July 1, 2005 with the approval of the ACA Governing Council. Although approval was made by the Board of Trustees, it was the ACA Code of Ethics Review Task Force that took on the task of reviewing its code of ethics. However, its current code of ethics... middle of paper... policies and procedures will assist employees in the event of conflicts, but will also help establish standards within the professional environment in relation to safety and well being. or even customers and professionals. Along with ongoing changes within society, these codes of ethics and conduct should be updated to adhere to such changes; however, it does not mean that they need to be changed every year.
