Imagine you are playing basketball. You are playing as hard as you can and your team is very close to winning. You get close to making a basket and out of nowhere another player slams into you. You hit the floor and your leg immediately feels pain and it's difficult to walk. You have torn your anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly known as the ACL, and need surgery. After surgery, the road to recovery is long. You will need to visit a physical therapist several times a week to work on the repaired ligament. After you delve deeper into your career, you may decide to pursue a career in physical therapy because of the responsibilities of the job, the education and training needed, and the benefits after retirement. What is a physiotherapist? A physical therapist, also known as a PT, is a person who helps patients with injuries or illnesses restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, improve balance, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities in people's daily lives . There are more than 8 different types of physical therapy. Orthopedic medicine deals with bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Sports medicine helps athletes who have suffered an injury and helps them recover quickly and effectively. They also teach athletes how to protect themselves from other injuries. Neurology deals with the structure and function of the nervous system. Common neurological problems include spinal cord injuries and Alzheimer's. Cardiopulmonary medicine involves the blood vessels and heart. The therapist helps patients achieve a level of resilience and independence after surgery.
