Not everyone is willing to risk their lives for others. I think some people have the strength and courage to join the military. I think some people join the military to better themselves because maybe they don't have a good life at home, so they have no choice but to join the military for a better life. According to the Defense ManPower Data Center, only 0.4% of the U.S. population is active military overall (Chalabi, 2015). The percentage of people active in the military would probably be around 0.2%. People who are in the military probably feel unique because not many people want to join.
