Just as we saw in Meier, the teacher who has a limited understanding of a student's individual personality and needs in a special education program often leads to reprimanding the student. Robert was suspended on multiple occasions, when he was simply mirroring the behavior of other children, and did not understand the connotation of the words he used. Like Robert, the boy described by Jay in Broderick's text is another traditional student, resulting in inappropriate defensive language when verbally attacked by another student. The teacher cannot be everywhere at the same time and only hears the use of obscenity; in an attempt to regain control he uses the same ineffective punishment system he would use on other students. This is a common “social interpretation” as Broderick describes it, or a misinterpretation of student interaction that ignores conversational context. Differentiated instruction is proposed as part of the solution to inequity, neglect of diversity, and exclusion in schools across America (196). While the somewhat preachy conclusion about democracy didn't appeal to me, Broderick and colleagues make an incredibly valuable suggestion that standardization of education fails all pedagogical programs. At my school site, when students who are typically segregated are incorporated
