Topic > Stephen King Using Gothic Literature - 908

Stephen King is known as one of the greatest horror and gothic writers of our time. The reason for this is its ability to blend the gothic elements created by stories like Dracula or Frankenstein and today's horror. King wrote hundreds of short stories, but two in particular “The Night Flier” and “Popsy” show his unique ability to combine gothic elements of old literature with realistic settings and people of our time. One of his greatest talents is being able to use gothic elements such as vampires and make us see them in a different light. King's unique writing style, with its old gothic ideals, new horror ideas, and use of realistic settings, helps put a new spin on what we think of as gothic history. King owes his success to his ability to take what he says are "real fears." ” (The Stephen King Story, 47) and turn them into a horror story. When he says "real fears" they're things we've all thought about, like a monster under the bed or even a child being kidnapped, and he's making them reality in his story. King views “horror fiction…as a metaphor” (46) for everything that goes wrong in our lives. His mind and writing seem to dwell deep within the fears and nightmares of the American people and this is what makes his writings reach so many people and instill in his reader the terror he writes about. The short story “The Night Flier King uses gothic elements to convey its vampire story from what we all know about vampires and introduces its own elements by adding horror and terror. Instead of the traditional dark castle, King chooses a lonely and strange airport, but still manages to include gothic elements such as "thunderheads, some with lightning still exploding inside them like giant fireworks" (Nightmares and Dreamscapes, 113- 114). The main character is a man named Dees, he is a lonely reporter and photographer. This man's goal in life is history and he was “hardened and proud” of it (131). At the beginning of the story Dees is searching for a killer who appears to be a vampire-like creature. King provides details as the story progresses to maintain suspense and allow the reader to see the real vampire.
