Recognition and Equality in the Color Purple The book, The Color Purple, by Alice Walker is a good example of how over the years women have made steps from giant towards achieving success, recognition and equality. From the day they started to get closer to each other, bringing a unity in which they were never used to achieving their goal of high quality. Their particular objective was against the maximum freedom of human rights. It was difficult to maintain because they could not report non-equality because they were treated like slaves. However it was easy to complete with the victory. In the book there seems to be a point where Celie opened her eyes and started her own business. He owns a business making pants that he founded while living in Shug's house. He made custom pants for his family and then everyone wanted a pair. Thanks to his job he has money and dresses well. Her business is booming and everyone orders her pants. This also shows that element of the pants. The pants of her business provide Celie with her identity; now people see her as a master of something and not as a housewife. It also shows Celie that she has an identity and that she doesn't have to live with men and do what they tell her. This also gives her financial freedom. The business has brought her success where she inherits the house she grew up in and feels even better because now she lives alone and Nettie, her sister who lives in Africa, can come with Celie's children and her husband and stay with Celie. At this moment the happiness is about to fade as a message arrives from the Ministry of Defense that Nettie's ship has sunk. This has led to Celie losing all her hope and feeling that there is nothing to live for when she states, "Being alive is starting to feel like a terrible strain." (Page 262). However, then Cellie receives more letters from Nettie stating, "But one of these days I expect to see your face." In conclusion, this shows that great successes are happening and that things are improving. Nettie ends up coming to America and living with Cellie and so that's a big success.
