There are many different religions in the world, but they are all capable of doing similar things. Religion plays a significant role in the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. In this book, religion is important to the people of Umuofia, which is the village where the protagonist, Okonkwo, lives. The people of the village believed that there was only one religion and when they were presented with another religion they did not believe it. This religion was Christianity. Throughout the novel the power of religion guides and destroys Umuofia society. First, the church disproves many of the Igbo superstitions, which encourages the Igbos to break the traditions they had followed for many years. Therefore, slowly destroying their society. For example, when the white men who brought Christianity to the people of Umuofia tell the village clan about their new religion. They ask for a piece of land on which to build their church. The clan decides to give them a piece of land from the Evil Forest and let them stay. To the clan's surprise, this happens: “Finally the day came when all the missionaries were supposed to die. But they were still alive and were building a new house of red earth and straw for their teacher, Mr. Kiaga. They got a handful of new converts that week.(151).” The Evil Forest was known as a forest where people go to die, and the clan members thought that by allowing the missionaries to build their church in the Evil Forest they could easily get rid of them. Since white men did not die but lived, this made the Ibos question their beliefs. When some villagers realize that they have been deceived by their gods, they decide to convert to Christianity. Or because Christianity seemed stronger than… the middle of paper… he took back his religion and also says that our customs are bad.” Christianity is destroying and leading two different societies. He guides people who do not believe in Christianity to convert because converts who once held the same beliefs as them say that their customs are bad. This causes Ibo people to convert to Christianity, which leads the Christian society towards better directions because they are getting more converts. At the same time this destroys the Igbo religion because they are losing their members to the Christian society. Religion has many effects in every society. He can destroy it by proving that the customs are wrong or he can guide it as he guides converts to believe in religion. Religion creates two different societies and while it guides one to become stronger, it will simultaneously destroy another. Religion drives societies and destroys them.
