A new era in the United States emerged in the early 1920s. With the party atmosphere, criminal activity was at its peak and giving way to powerful new leaders stepping forward. For fourteen years, Prohibition, a law that banned alcohol within the borders of the United States, was in place. It made the production, sale and transportation of liquor illegal across the nation. During that era a new generation of gangsters came to power. Gangsters took advantage of the high demand for alcohol in society and became very powerful and wealthy. Due to the imbalance between supply and demand, the gangsters managed to get rich very quickly and soon took control of the entire city. Al Capone emerged on top of Chicago controlling every aspect of commerce in and out of that city. These days, people have been unable to find work and food to support their families, yet Al Capone has managed to offer them those things for those in need to benefit his trading system. Due to the scarcity of jobs and financial insufficiency, Al Capone was able to force his way into society and control all aspects of trade and business. After Torrio retired, Capone became the "dictator" of the streets of Chicago. He ran businesses such as gambling, prostitution and smuggling. All this led to the expansion of his territories which also led him to implement all the rivalry between him and the other families. Alfonso's wealth was estimated at one hundred million dollars two years after he fully seized power of the empire. Prohibition opened the door for the emergence of gangsters. These people were able to satisfy the needs and demands of the people and their alcohol. The 18th Amendment and Prohibition were a failure. Due to laws banning alcohol, p...... middle of paper ...... along with his family due to the wealth created by the Prohibition era. Overall, if the 18th Amendment had not been ratified, gangsters like Al Capone would not have been able to rise to power and influence society the way he did. Jobs were limited and in short supply. People needed a way to provide for themselves and their families. This was the main reason why immigrants came to this country. Al Capone's empire spread across the city and needed many workers to fill those places. With no jobs provided, it was a perfect idea to get people involved in organized crime to help them benefit and benefit Al Capone himself. Al Capone and his family left a mark in the society which created a way for organized crime which still exists today dealing with many activities like in the past including gambling, prostitution, bootlegging and many more.
