The ambivalence of chivalric ideals in Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. After reading the poem I was very fascinated by the story of the heroic journey. The fact that such a fascinating narrative could be produced more than 600 years ago was very surprising to me. The diversity in the literature is also amazing. Set in the time of King Arthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a fantasy story of Sir Gawain who accepts a green knight's challenge and embarks on a journey. The plot and setting are mythical and magic plays a significant role. However we can still find that various elements reflecting the medieval period are abundant in the poem. Medieval literature was not as dark or dark a world as the literature in "The Wanderer" or "Beowulf." words like war and revenge disappeared, but rather brilliant humor and beautiful romantic love were richer in those times. Knights reflecting the values of the Middle Ages always fought against the evils that hindered the faith of Christianity and at the same time also often experienced love affairs with beautiful ladies. So what would be the ideal of the warrior in the Middle Ages? How does the main character of the poem display such an ideal? I think these are the important questions to raise for understanding Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In this essay I would like to discuss the ideal knight manifested in the poem and analyze the meanings and functions of the three characters; Gawain, Green Knight and King Arthur. As the poem suggests, we can find that the writer attached importance to unlimited beneficence, brotherly love, pure mind and ways. and compassion' as the main virtues of a knight. Gawain equips himself with the shield on which the pentagram is carved before starting the journey to fulfill his promise to the green knight. The symbol is a complex set of military, religious and social virtues that a knight should live up to. A knight should obviously be brave enough and at the same time should have a warm heart to feel compassion and mercy towards the weak and the poor. Furthermore, it should convey faith in God and be endowed with a strong religious conviction. This shows that the knight must comply perfectly with these obligations without forgetting any of them.
