Svidrigailov's rejection in Crime and PunishmentCrime and Punishment Raskolnikov would reject Svidrigailov because he knows that this man has plans against his sister. Dounia has been his main concern in the last two chapters: he haunts Svidrigailov not because he enjoys his company, but because he continually worries about his intentions. Svidrigailov and Raskolnikov at the bar discuss Dounia and the interactions between him and her at Marfa Petrovna's house. In the end Raskolnikov is deceived by the Svid. base, and leaves him alone after jumping into a carriage and running at full speed - however he will not go to the islands, he will return and has a meeting with Dounia planned. Svidrigailov, like Porfiry, employs tacit and underhanded tactics. Raskolnikov realizes this and resents Svidrigailov for it. There is another very important reason why Raskolnikov hates Svid. As Hobbes pointed out, if a person knows that another man knows the truth about a lie he is telling, or is in a position to discover such information, he will subsequently hate that person, regardless of the previous relationship he had. and antipathy may be repressed, but even then it still has the capacity to manifest itself in a deluge of rejection. Raskolnikov has, so far, managed to repress his anger towards Svidrigailov and also towards Porfiry. He yells at Porfiry to arrest him or leave him alone, but is much less outwardly forceful with his anger. Does Svidrigailov represent Raskolnikov's evil side? Does it embody Raskolnikov's ideas and philosophies? Perhaps it is easy to say yes, to simplify this great work of philosophical and psychological writing. It's much better to avoid the trap and simply say that he is the representation of R.'s evil side. The story is much deeper than that. Svidrigailov harasses, annoys and annoys young women who do not wish to be associated with him. He indulges their weakness and, by his own admission, uses deception to win them over. This is not Raskolnikov. Raskolnikov is the man who conceives a theory - a theory that actually had as its aim the victory over society - Svid. he simply exists in a nihilistic atmosphere of vice and unbridled behavior.
