Topic > Roles of Women in the 19th Century - 1395

Although characters like Laura and the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper lived comfortable lives provided by their husbands, they do not live fulfilling lives. These characters live a life where they serve their husband and are considered inferior to the men who care for them. The narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper is completely aware that her husband does not see them as equals and this weighs heavily on her mental stability. However in The Garden Party, Laura doesn't seem to be as aware of how her opinions don't matter to those around her, this could be due to her age or because she accepts this attitude as a social norm. The Yellow Wallpaper and The Garden Party showed the point of view of women's inequality compared to the standards of two separate women who had two different points of view; a point of view where the character couldn't handle it and from a point of view where the character was either oblivious to that fact or simply didn't care.
