The Crimes of Crime and Punishment The topic of this article is Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky. There are several questions on this topic. We have chosen three main points to talk about: the crimes, the people who solved them and the different types of punishments. These are the topics we have chosen for our report. Crime in the nineteenth century was rife even outside London. But due to poverty and disease on the streets, crime was the only way to survive. Most of the crimes committed in London involved theft. Gangs of pickpockets and street gamblers were a regular sight when walking the main streets of London. Prostitution was also a major source of money on the streets, practiced by both girls and boys. But the crimes committed by the middle class and the rich were mostly property crimes and disputes which constituted 90% of all crimes committed by the upper class. In Victorian England and as today there are two categories into which crimes fall. “Indictable” which is the same as our criminal crimes which constitute all major crimes. These crimes consist of: murder, armed robbery, burglary, theft, rape and assault on the police. The next category is called "summer" crimes, which is the same as our minor crimes. The summer crimes were all minor crimes such as: property crimes, vagrancy, drunkenness, prostitution, petty thefts and all other minor crimes. Probably the most famous criminal of the Victorian period was "Jack the Ripper". Jack the Ripper was “the first modern sexual serial killer” ( Sugden, p. 2). Jack's trademark was killing prostitutes. But he not only killed them, but surgically removed their organs and viscera and placed them next to the corpse. "Jack the Ripper" wasn't his only nickname, he was also called "the Whitechaple murder" because the bodies were found near Whitechapel Road, and "the leather apron" because of a man who passed by and beat up prostitutes . for no reason. Jack the Ripper is credited with nine murders, but police believe he may be responsible for more. All the murders occurred within one square mile. Jack is described as carrying a long knife with which he would cut open his victims and a black Gladstone bag, the contents of which are unknown..
