Topic > Analysis of Kantian Ethics and Ethical Egoism - 1098

O'Connor (2015, para. 2) Bleeken states that he "could not face the rest of his life in prison." According to the summary on Bleeken, B. Wolcott (2015), he was "cited that a life sentence would cause him 'unbearable psychological distress'." From this definition, it is quite clear that Bleeken wants to undertake physician-assisted suicide as he would like to end the suffering he is currently experiencing while in prison. However, ethical egoism states that it is necessary to evaluate the long-term and short-term benefits of a decision on oneself. For Bleeken, a long-term benefit is that he will no longer have to continue serving a life sentence in prison after 30 years. Another long-term benefit is that there is no chance of Bleeken committing these acts again as he will be deceased. However, in terms of short-term benefits, I personally don't see any other than to reiterate that he should serve a small prison sentence ending his prison term.
