According to the Collins dictionary, the term "elderly" is associated with people who are quite old or have passed middle age. In the Caribbean, the defining age is mostly linked to 60 years and above. However, the variation in age takes into account differences in social class, gender, functional skills related to the workforce, the political and economic situation of the country, as well as retirement age. This report covers the elderly population of a corporate home in the Kingston and St. Andrew region and the National Council for the Elderly in Jamaica. Erickson's stages of psychosocial development have two particular stages that relate to the elderly population. In the seventh stage of psychosocial development, the task to be completed in adulthood between the ages of 25 and 65 is generativity versus stagnation. If the older person carries out the task of generativity positively, the results are creativity, productivity and concern for others. However, if the task was unsuccessful, stagnation will lead the individual to become self-indulgent, self-interested, and display a lack of interests and commitments. In the eighth and final stage, from age 65 until death, the task involves integrity versus despair. If the task is completed successfully, the individual will become more accepting of the value and uniqueness of their life (integrity). Otherwise, you feel a sense of loss and contempt for others (despair).
