Topic > College Admissions Essay for a Doctorate in Geophysics

I am applying to the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Geophysics beginning in the fall 2014 semester. I am interested in reservoir geophysics, in particular rock physics, AVO and seismic data inversion. I am excited by the prospect of conducting research and developing my technical skills in geophysics and believe I would be an excellent PhD candidate. My exposure to reservoir geophysics began when I took the course “Seismic Inversion for Reservoir Characterization” taught by Prof. Dr. Ir. Sigit Sukmono, M.Sc. in my degree. The topic of my thesis concerns seismic inversion and seismic multi-attribute analysis. I completed my undergraduate research while doing an internship program at Chevron Pacific Indonesia in 2008, with the help of Professor Sigit as a supervisor. I was subsequently awarded a scholarship by my company in 2009 to obtain the Master Dual Degree program, the collaborative program involves one year of intensive study – for a MT degree – at the Department of Geophysical Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB ) and additional semesters – for an MSC degree – in the Department of Exploration Geophysics, Curtin University of Technology. After attending the course "Seismic modeling and amplitude variation with offset" taught by Professor Boris Gurevich at Curtin University, I became interested in rock physics. I wrote my master's thesis in Rock Physics and AVO Analysis, with Professor Boris as supervisor. I currently work at the Upstream Technology Center (UTC), a division under the PT's Upstream Directorate. Pertamina (PERSERO), an Indonesian state energy company. As a geophysics specialist... mid-article... research activity in this group for the many years of my PhD under the supervision of distinguished researchers would provide me with valuable benefits for my research career. Dr. Yuefeng Sun caught my interest due to his research focused on rock physics and fracture identification and characterization. Dr. Richard Gibson's research interests in reservoir characterization, anisotropy, and imaging also piqued my interest in joining his research group. Taking all these factors into account, I believe that Texas A&M University is the perfect location for my doctoral research and I am confident that I will make a positive contribution to the ongoing research work in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University. I look forward to joining Texas A&M University as a prospective doctoral student in your esteemed department. Thank you for considering my application.
