Some people believe that first impressions are long-lasting and difficult to overcome if they are negative. As a leader a person cannot judge solely based on first impressions nor can he ignore them. Much can be gleaned from first impressions and this knowledge should be retained as you gain a better understanding of that individual. An extrovert and introvert scenario of John was given in the class example. Let's explore how first impressions affect people, let's take a look at how John's image has changed from one reading to the next. Finally, try to see if John's image in your mind changes if the scenarios are read in a different order, from introverted to extroverted? First Impressions As individuals, many of us retain that first impression of a person, whether it's good or bad. By holding on to those first impressions you can see a distorted view of an individual. This could happen if the individual's first impression was negative. The individual could do great things after that first impression, but the vision holder cannot see him because he has distorted vision. The individual may have simply been having a “bad day.” Something to always keep in mind is that you never know what is going on behind the closed door of an individual's home, so don't assume that everything is fine. We each have bumps in the road and can cause us to have those "bad days" and sometimes leniency or understanding that we are not all perfect can go a long way.
