Some evidence points to overeating and lack of exercise as a major cause. According to the website publichealth.org, “Americans are known for consuming fast food: such food makes up about 11% of the average American diet. Another study shows that added sugars from sodas and energy drinks are wreaking havoc on Americans' waistlines." So the question is not just how much we eat, but what do we eat? On the other hand, Americans spend more than $50 billion a year on quick diets, books and workout videos to lose weight. Especially as a New Year's resolution, I wish I had too many dinners and parties over the holidays. The irony of conflicting messages about health and food consumption in America could send anyone into a therapist's chair with mixed emotions about food and eating.
