Topic > Acid Rain: The Causes and Effects of Acid Rain

When there is a large amount of acid rain falling in an area over a period of time, it can damage the environment for all the creatures that live there . Acid rain can make a lake acidic, which will most likely kill most of the animals living in that lake. (McCormick 16) This happens all over the world. Michael Hopkin, journalist and author of “Acid Rain Still Bad for Canada,” says that “North America's lakes and streams are struggling to recover from the effects of acid rain, despite reduced emissions of the pollutants that cause it . Without further cuts, it could be millennia before the hardest-hit sites recover, environmentalists say.” It can also kill animals that depend on the lake for food. When a food source that animals in an area depend on for survival is reduced or even eliminated entirely. The animals that depended on it will either die, causing an even bigger problem for the ecosystem in that area, or they will have to find a new source of food. If the new food the animal has found is already a food source for another animal thus causing competition for food, this may reduce the numbers of one or perhaps even both animals. All of this can happen because of acid rain and what it can do to the environment. There is an article on the EPA student website that shows how acid rain can affect an ecosystem's food web. “This process continues throughout the entire food chain. AS,
