Oliver Twist Chapter NotesChapter 1: The novel is set in England. Oliver was born in a workhouse; his mother had been taken to the warehouse after being found on the street. As soon as Oliver is born, his mother kisses him and dies. After her death, the drunken doctor notes that she is not married. Oliver Twist is then left alone with the authorities. Chapter 2: The authorities send Oliver to another hospice where a new character is introduced. Mrs. Mann, an elderly woman who is the supervisor of the foster home where Oliver was sent. She is also said to take most of the money for her adopted children and use it for herself, leaving the children to starve. Oliver spends nine years in a foster home, on his birthday he is beaten and locked in a cellar. That same day Mr. Bumble, a fat man who beats children, tells Mrs. Mann that Oliver is too old to be in his nursing home. Mrs. Mann gives Oliver some bread before sending him to the workhouse so that he doesn't seem too hungry. Once in the new warehouse Oliver loses a bet and has to ask for more food for dinner, the authorities are offended and decide to offer 5 pounds as a reward for anyone who catches Oliver. Chapter 3: Oliver was punished for asking for more food by being locked in a dark room for a week. After imprisonment Gamfield offered to take Oliver away from the authorities as he was in desperate need of money. As Gamfield had a bad history of orphans dying on his property, they set the reward at three pounds. Oliver begs not to be taken by the man. Chapter 4: The authorities decide to put Oliver on a ship because he would die quite easily at sea, but then Mr. Sowerberry is introduced, he is the builder of the coffin. .... halfway through the paper ...... in the end he commits suicide by trying to lower himself with a rope. Chapter 51: There is a very confusing section of this chapter about the story of Mr. Leefors and who ends up with the family fortune. The implied part was that if his child was a girl he would gain the fortune, while if he was a boy he would only receive the fortune if he did not commit a crime. Harry also gave up trying to get into politics to marry Rose. Chapter 52: Fagin is in court and ends up guilty and sentenced to death. He spends a couple of days going crazy in prison counting the days until his death. Oliver and Mr. Brownlow go to visit him on his last day of life. Chapter: 53 The author ends everything in a way that is nice and cute. Noah is freed; Mr. Brownlow divides the property between Monks and Oliver. But he still ends up dying in prison. Mr. Brownlow accepts Oliver as his son.
