Parallels between God and AI in Neuromancer The world of "flesh" provides the basis for much of what happens in William Gibson's novel Neuromancer. The characters' lives are shaped by their experiences in the flesh. The realm of artificial intelligence (AI) is the basis for all central events in a character's life. All events and lives are under the control of AI, and all things serve the purpose of AI. The Matrix serves to bind the two realms together, in times and places where AI cannot physically control the flesh. The relationship between these realms is a direct parallel to God's relationship with man. It's difficult to convey exactly what Gibson wanted to represent in Neuromancer without obscuring it with doctrinal differences. However, it can be safely assumed that AI is destined to "be God". This is not a ridiculous statement, since the behavior of the AI character, Wintermute, certainly acts in a divine way. When Case is first contacted by Wintermute, a very strange and supernatural encounter occurs. Imagine how Case must have felt, being "chased" by ringing phones (p.98), when behind every ring he knows that a very powerful force is waiting to convey life-changing information to him. According to Christian tradition, God is constantly trying to open a line of communication with humans, but an earthly obstacle prevents humans from “picking up the phone” and answering God's call. You could say it is the fear of unknown and fear of the inevitable or obvious causing this separation, which would fit perfectly with Case's reasons for avoiding Wintermute. You could say that Case's experience in the world of flesh has led him to be c...... at the center of the mission...... of paper. Case is contacted by the AI and told of his success. He is later informed that the pockets of toxins embedded in his body have been treated. What you see here is the AI's gift of a second life to Case. This second life is similar to what Christians expect in the afterlife: salvation from all evils such as drugs, a life lived in sin and the restlessness of the conscience. It's interesting to note, too, that Case uses his brain extensively, whether tickling the receptors with amphetamines, searching for rhyme and reason in everything he knows about Wintermute, or stretching his neurons into the matrix. The apparent "leader" of the AI is called Neuromancer, and his name is a description of his character: one who deals with things of the mind. AI gods, therefore, are interested in the thoughts, beliefs, and decisions that lead to the earthly enactment of their will. Just like God.
