Topic > PICOT Question - 891

In a broader sense, keeping up with the latest evidence-based practices in healthcare can be a difficult task for nurses. The amount of evidence-based information available can be overwhelming. Add to this the challenge of finding the latest information on a smaller scope in a specialized area of the medical field, and it can be even more daunting. One tool nurses can use to facilitate research is to formulate a clinical question in PICOT format. A PICOT question is designed to make it easier for you to find such information by gathering feedback from others. This document will define what a PICOT question is, identify the need for change in my current work environment, and formulate a PICOT question to help me gather evidence to facilitate that change.Definition of PICOTThe PICOT format is made up of five different components. The (P) indicates the population of interest to which the question is directed. This could be a large population, such as all people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, or a smaller population, such as males over the age of 45 diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The next component is (I) , which represents the intervention or issue of interest. This may be the use of a particular medication or procedure, such as laboratory tests, to address and understand the patient's problem. Component (C) is the comparison of interests. This may include a control group of patients who were given a placebo or the intervention was the usual standard of care. The component (O) represents the expected result of the implemented intervention. It is important to include the expected outcome of an intervention in the form of the question because it may allow the person carrying out the search to find existing evidence...... middle of the paper ......le, “Recovery of practice-based evidence” emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based practice to care for mentally ill patients. “They also found similar consensus in requiring that mental health care be evidence-based, focus on effective treatments and best practices, and deliver measurable outcomes” (Gordon & Ellis, 2013, p. 4). Conclusion In conclusion, I believe that asking a PICOT question can be an effective way for nurses to find relevant information more quickly and easily with greater relevance to the intended topic. It can help find stronger supporting evidence that can help nurses make better clinical decisions and make changes where necessary for patient safety and satisfaction. By using the PICOT format, nurses can help formulate new interventions that will lead to better outcomes for patients.
