During the 19th century, many ideas were introduced that generated strife between people and their countries. Many have fought for rights while others have lost their lands and the resources needed to thrive. The people began to look for new ways to become a tenacious nation and found a way to do so by becoming imperialistic. This contemporary ideal has helped many countries to misappropriate places they never imagined. Many viewed imperialism, the takeover of a weak nation, in a positive light, but it sparked many wars and separated countries, families and cultures. The First World War was the result of imperialism and the clash between the Great Powers. Another war of this era was the Spanish-American War, in which the United States invaded and colonized the small island of Puerto Rico, maintaining its imperialistic power to this day. In 2005, after more than 20 years in hiding, the FBI gathered information on the location of the leader of the Macheteros, Fiiberto Ojeda and killed him. Many people think that this was done to avoid possible independence movements. The Puerto Rican people have sought ways to become independent from the imperialist power of the United States, but each time they have failed. The lack of adequate resources makes it impossible for the island to regain power. The entire economy of the island is based on US charity, becoming one of the poorest countries that did not ask for its own way of government. Unfortunately all the political and economic struggles have turned this beautiful paradise into a silent war zone as many of its citizens have had to resort to illegal methods to meet their needs..
