In the 1980s, video games became very popular and their market exploded. The market has continued to grow ever since, making it one of the most popular forms of entertainment today. There has been much speculation about the effects that both games and gaming have had on society as a whole. Games were first invented in the late 1940s and were found on mainframe computers. The first commercially viable game was Computer Space in 1971, a coin-operated arcade version of an earlier game called Spacewar! And it was the first mass-produced video game with 1500 copies. As games progressed, so did their influence, impacting subsequent generations. The effect that gaming has had on this generation is hotly debated. But it wasn't just the game that had an effect on society. The games themselves had such a huge impact that movies were made about them, clothes were made around them, and they were supported by famous bands and artists. The most heated debate about video games is obviously whether or not they encourage violence towards those who play them. Debates often arise over the depiction of criminal behavior, bloody or overly realistic violence, full or partial nudity, virtual sex, or any other objectionable material. This often leads to video games being blamed for many modern problems, particularly among young people. Several studies have been conducted that have had conflicting results. Some studies have claimed to find a direct link with video games to all of the above. Other studies have found no correlation. A major argument for those who oppose violence is the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in the United States. In this case two individuals, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, killed twelve students, a teacher and injured... in the middle of the sheet of paper... and many other tasks are performed. This clearly exercises the brain's ability to process more data and information. Quick Thinking and Quick Analysis In the heat of combat, the breakneck speed of a race or the frenetic traversal of an adventure game quick thinking and quick analysis are used heavily. A player will analyze the fight, the next corner or area they are trying to maneuver, and make quick decisions about what the next course of action will be. This is done constantly throughout the game, forcing players to constantly adapt and change their plans. Reading and Math Skills Young players are forced to learn to read to understand instructions, objectives, and plots in most games. Mathematical skills are greatly improved through games that involve resource management. Strategy and anticipation Perseverance Relief from aggression
