George Orwell introduces a world where radical policies are put in place to prevent people from exerting influence against the state. All history is erased and knowledge is forbidden in the world of 1984, Oceania. Special groups of people are brought together to continually rewrite history while language is reduced to a few words. The social hierarchy between knowledge-bearers and knowledge-bearers expands until it reaches extreme distinctions. The people tasked with changing the truth, the Party members, are constantly monitored by devices in every room that observe and listen to them throughout the day. A special police force is created to police their actions and thoughts. All party members are subject to this harsh surveillance by the state. Even people who think of committing crimes or have beliefs contrary to the ideals of the state are immediately eliminated by this special police force. Oceania's past has been marked by attempts at revolution by the people and the leader, Big Brother, changes the situation. eliminating all chances of this happening again. While this may not be the case in the United States of America, both Eurasia and the United States have put in place similar policies and programs to regulate its population. The Thought Police is an organization created by the government to neglect its people and to make sure that no one has an advantage to overthrow the government. The United States of America has excitingly similar programs, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Security Agency, and items such as the Terrorist Watch List. Each of them has a job description to seek out individuals who threaten the integrity of the government and to eliminate or imprison them. One agency recently drove into the middle of a paper sidewalk, effectively blocking pedestrian traffic. Sitting on the sidewalk with bandanas over their faces and arms tied to prevent arrest, the protesters did not move after police asked them to clear the area. Next, Lt. John Pike casually discharges a canister of pepper spray directly into the protesters' faces. This was a clear symbol of police brutality; An absurd amount of force was used against people sitting on the sidewalk. While better actions could have been taken, this is a prime example of police force corruption in the United States. Orwell's Thought Police effectively clarifies the hidden problems in today's world. Organizations and agencies put together by government are everywhere and unavoidable. Both Eurasia and the United States do their best to hide corruption and eliminate people who try to reveal it.
