Individualism is rampant in our world. More and more people care about what they want, when they want it and how they want it. They put on blinders and continue their work, convinced that “looking for number one” is the only way to succeed and find happiness. If everyone adopted this way of thinking and living, the world would become violently competitive, dark and callous. However, if we open our lives and render service to those less fortunate than us, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. There are countless members of society who make service and ultimately personal sacrifice a part of their daily lives. One of the greatest examples the world has of an altruistic person is Mother Teresa. He said: “In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love… What matters is not the greatness of our actions, but the amount of love we put into them.” Doctors Without Borders is a powerful humanitarian organization that recently carried out volunteer work in Haiti. Part of their mission statement reads: “…We combine direct medical care with a commitment to witnessing and reporting the underlying causes of suffering. Our aid workers and staff protest violations of humanitarian law on behalf of voiceless populations and bring their patients' concerns to public forums...” These are just two traditional examples of people and organizations living and they work for others, to improve the quality of their lives. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it's a big or small need, we become a part of their life and can help relieve heavy burdens. We feel good about looking outside of ourselves and contributing… middle of paper… by dedicating time in our busy lives to serve people in need, they too will learn the importance of self-sacrifice. Our actions speak louder than our words. We can preach to them all day about service and sacrifice for others, but if they don't witness our active participation in these acts, they will likely follow our example and not heed our words. If we open our lives and serve others, those less fortunate than us, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it's a big or small need, we become a part of their life and can help relieve heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellow man allows the best in each of us to shine and we can become an example for our children.
