The film did not misunderstand any important historical events. The film deviated from the book only with some very minor details, such as the fact that Solomon actually had three children instead of two. Instead of simply being assigned to work with Tibeats in the film, Solomon was actually sold to Tibeats by Ford to repay a debt. The film also ruled out a second meeting between Platt and Tibeats. Tibeats charged Platt with a hatchet, Platt fought with him and ran away to hide in the bayou. There was one other minor mistake in the film. In the film, both of his children recognized him when they returned home to New York. In the autobiography, Margaret, Soloman's youngest daughter, did not recognize him. This author thinks that McQueen did this to make the film a little less harrowing than the previous one
