Addiction is everywhere, from celebrity tabloids, to television, and possibly to a family member or close friend. There is alcoholism, drug abuse and gambling addiction; the effects of this are devastating. For example, the following excerpt is from James Salant's heartbreaking Leaving Dirty Jersey: A Crystal Meth Memoir: “I gave the spoon to Doug and tried to pull thirty units of water into the syringe. Doug hit me on the side of the head and said, "You're shaking too much, let me." I pulled away from the faucet and dropped the syringe into the sink. Then I rolled up the shirt sleeve on my right arm. I looked at my arm. I had tracks, needle marks, up and down my arm. There were blood stains from the day before on my shirt sleeve. I held out my arm and asked, "I'll take the first one and I want Coke, not the watered down one!" Doug pulled my arm closer to him and inserted the needle. While I was shaking, he said, “Make it last a while.” I felt the drugs hit me and ran out of the bathroom. I was shaking and I couldn't breathe... All my senses were focused on the sensation I felt after the cocaine injection...” [4]Salant presents a sad story of stereotypical addiction: the drug addict. The excerpt from his book shows the depths to which addiction victims will stoop to get their “fix,” or the substance or device the addict wants. This excerpt can be considered “stereotypical” for several reasons.
