This was a work that opened with many questions. Who really killed Drood? Where is Drood? And what is happening? The opera's scenes gradually resolve to an opium den, where a nameless man awakens from his drugged state and is fulfilled in the gifts of a porcelain man, a lascar, and a haggard woman. The nameless man listens intently to the drugged mutterings of all three companions, but instead finds them all incomprehensible, which seems to reassure him. Later he leaves the opium. Edwin Drood was a story based on a murder mystery where Drood was dead and his uncle was the prime suspect. The story was set in the cathedral city of Closter Ham. Neville had been attracted to Rosa and argued with Edwin over his callous treatment of his future wife. Edwin provokes him and Neville reacts violently, giving Jasper the opportunity to spread rumors about Neville's previous reputation for having a very violent temper. Mr Crisparkle; the minor canon, tries to reconcile Edwin and Neville, who then agrees to apologize to Edwin if the former will exonerate him. It was later agreed that they would celebrate together for this reason on Christmas Eve at Jaspers' house.
