Topic > Convergence, Fan Culture and Star Trek - 1339

Many scholars have their own opinion on what convergence is and it all depends on the field of work they are involved in, which makes it difficult to give convergence a definitive definition. There is simply no agreed definition, but as Potter Steward would say: "I can't define it, but I know what it is when I see it." One of the main elements of convergence is interactivity and technology, which is amply demonstrated through participatory cultures like that of Star Trek. Star Trek has a long history spanning over four decades. It took the form of six television series, eleven feature films, and hundreds of fan works, but it all started with Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). TOS follows the adventures of the starship Enterprise and its crew led by James T. Kirk. Unfortunately the series only lasted three seasons before being canceled by NBC but through syndication the show grew in popularity developing an extreme following in the 1970s (The First Post). Furthermore, the enormous popularity of Star Wars breathed even more life into the once-dead franchise, spawning two feature films featuring the original cast, and with the two films the franchise was reborn, spawning ten more films and four more television series. Most of what Star Trek is known for is its fans and that's where the convergence comes in. Convergence is not simply defined by a definition. There are many different interpretations of convergence theory. August E. Grant states that convergence is a technology-driven phenomenon and that it is an ongoing trend, which makes it more difficult to analyze since it is constantly progressing. We don't know where it will take us or how long it will last. Convergence is a buzzword acro...... middle of paper...... Post | News, comments, opinions, people, art, sports and life.
