When I reflect on political tools and which one I think is of greater importance; I choose persuasion. Trying to persuade groups or individuals to think/do a specific action or stop them from behaving in a certain way is not only important; it is a prerequisite for success in life. I believe that persuasion is the most important political tool because of the weight it can transfer from the leader to the followers using it as a means of transportation. Successful leaders can direct their followers with simple incentives that alter how someone may behave or think; the persuasion tool is what seals the situation that can influence people towards you or push them away. I believe that, as an educator in today's schools, our successful principals are the individuals who use this tool to their advantage, which can create unity or spark a revolt. Suasion is the process of influencing someone's behavior to change or discourage them from thinking or committing an action. There are many examples of cases where this tool is used; from anti-smoking campaigns in health clinics to anti-junk food ads in school cafeterias and hallways today. This tool is flexible in the sense that someone can be “pushed” into making a decision or prevented from making a decision based on persuasive means. Some people may not care about an incentive or any kind; they may simply want to think or feel differently about the topic; persuasion can speed up this process. If I were to apply persuasion to a problem in education, I would try to "activate" today's teenagers in high school; trying to wake them up from the laziness that seems to affect their preparation for life after high school. Using persuasion effectively; high school students will be motivated to start “taking care of…half the paper…attention-grabbing types of materials to make sure school-wide visibility was high.” This program could also be implemented at low cost; the cost of photocopy paper together with other types of low-cost materials could guarantee the success of the school program which could be carried out twice a school year on a semester basis. As an administrator, you may want to remind your students and staff that “you can't put a price on a successful future” and to donate time to promote ideas about planning for a successful future; both in work and in higher education for all students. I consider persuasion the most important political tool because of the great influence it can have on a group or individual. If we can get people to make certain decisions, vote a certain way, and even think differently about their wants and needs, I consider that important; let alone powerful.
