The region of Alsace-Lorraine has historically produced conflicts between France and Germany. Following changes to the provincial borders of Alsace-Lorraine, people within the area had and still retain individual national and cultural identities. These unique identities come from French and German traditions. As time passed, the feeling of the Alsatians also increased. In 1871, when Prussia annexed Alsace-Lorraine, its citizens opposed German rule. In contrast, in 1919, when France regained the territory, people began to long for the formally hated German rule. The national and cultural identity of Alsace-Lorraine oscillated inversely with its territorial changes. Initially the Alsatians showed their resistance to German control of their territory. In response to the concession of Alsace, established in the Treaty of Frankfurt (1871), Alsatian leaders presented a declaration to the French National Assembly.
