Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew, is a romantic comedy written in the sixteenth voice. The show has been appropriated in many different films and musicals. Ten Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger, is a film that transformed the play. Both the film and the play use cross-dressing as a comic element. Both the play and the film have as their main themes money, gender roles and family relationships. The three main characters of the play and the film, Katherine (Kat), Petruchio (Patrick) and Bianca (Bianca), have many similarities and differences. However, the relationship between Kate and Patrick is very different from that between Katherine and Petruchio. Both the play and the film use cross-dressing as one of the main comedic elements. In The Taming of the Shrew, Lucentio is disguised as a Latin tutor to "woo" Bianca, as he falls in love with her the moment he sees her. Since Lucentio is disguised as a Latin tutor, there will be no Lucentio, but since Lucentio is an important man, people will notice if he is gone and wander where he is. For this reason Tranio, Lucentio's servant, disguises himself as Lucentio. Furthermore, Ortensio is disguised as a music teacher, as he also falls in love with Bianca. Similarly, in the film Ten Things I Hate About You, some people are disguised, for love. Cameron, is disguised as a French tutor, as he, like Lucentio, falls in love with Bianca Stratford the moment he sees her. Patrick Verona, is a mysterious character, who does not have a clear background. He is aggressive, smokes and drinks, but is disguised as a man who doesn't. At first he dates Kat to get money, but then falls in love with Kat. Money is one of the most important themes of the play and the film Ten things... middle of paper... ...is not a normal relationship. Katherine doesn't actually love Petruchio or even Petruchio. Petruchio only married Kate for money and because he wants a challenge, to try to tame Katherine. Their relationship is only for money and to prove that Kate can change from a shrew. On the other hand, Kat and Patrick's relationship is real. At first, for Patrick, their relationship was about money. They soon began to fall in love with each other and fall in love. However, unlike Katherine and Petruchio, Kat and Patrick actually love each other. Their relationship is real. Their love is shown when Kate flashes to get Patrick out of detention. Even when Patrick sang "can't take my eyes off me" to Kat, in front of the cheerleading team and only embarrassed himself for her. This shows that they truly care for each other and are willing to do anything for each other.
