Influences on how women should look are everywhere and this can start to impact them mentally and physically. Struggling with the ideas of beauty that the world puts in a woman's mind greatly affects her body image. Whether it's the magazine with the ultra-skinny model, the friend who's always obsessed with her weight, or the mother who tells her son he needs to lose weight; influences on body image are everywhere. Society's definition of beauty today is being thin with perfect hair, skin, breasts and cheekbones. The definition of beauty has changed with the advancement of technology and the passage of time. In Marilyn Monroe's time, she was the epitome of beauty, but by today's standards she is considered plus size and not up to par. Influences from places like the media, peers, and family on body image can lead to numerous psychological, emotional, and physical problems. Body image is not just how you look on the outside, but how you feel on the inside. In medicine and psychology, body image is how someone perceives their body and also their emotional attitudes towards their body (Nordqvist 1). On a more personal level, body image is how someone imagines themselves, how someone thinks others perceive them, and how someone looks and feels in their body. Every single person has a body image, but everyone also has a different approach to how they feel about their body. Whether it's loving everything, loving only certain parts, or completely loathing everything about your body, every person has a perception of how they feel about it.
