The idea that women are vulnerable and submissive by nature was implemented into the thinking of women as a whole. However, even today few realize the importance of women in society. Women in Latin America and outside the United States are still treated less than men. Women are placed in roles such as motherhood and responsible for household responsibilities. The idea of a woman holding positions of power in any way was considered scandalous. Even nowadays in Mexico and other Latin countries, few women hold positions of power in the country. Furthermore, machismo plays a significant role in the oppression of women where men must express their masculinity to assert their position. However, through violence women are subjected to violence which is the final act of putting a woman in “her place”. Women are more than just mothers, but women who have their own person. A male does not define what a woman should be like. Women like Sor Juana did what they loved most was to do well, but above all to acquire knowledge. Education is essential to succeed in society. While Octavo Paz makes an interesting point about the hijos de la Chigada, he defines Mexican women in a category that isn't true. Women are not submissive by nature, but due to society and ideas about machismo women are oppressed even in the present
