Neoeugenics is the idea of a new, “neo,” eugenics or a new way of creating a healthier race. Eugenics was first defined in the late 1800s by a man named Sir Francis Galton who stated that it was basically the study of traits that will cause an advantage or disadvantage in the traits of future generations. Eugenics soon transformed from using artificial selection to create a stronger species to the advancement of some races over others. When it comes to neo-eugenics, it is believed that it could turn into something similar to that of eugenics as the use of artificial selection would now be used to bring the upper class higher in standards of health, well-being and beauty. Others believe that the use of neoeugenics will help create healthier and more stable species. Whether good or bad, the way eugenics will advance will be in tailor-made children. Custom made babies are just like any other baby and will grow just like any other baby. The only difference between engineered children and normal children is that engineered children are genetically modified. Genetic modifications would ideally include immunity to disease, sex choice, physical characteristics, and mental and physical abilities. Genetic changes could be small or extensive at the parent's discretion, but responsible doctors may recommend some changes to combat some common family diseases. All this would eventually lead to more popular genes being passed on to children, and fewer and fewer changes will be needed. This is possible because DNA or genes are the basis of all characteristics of organisms. Right now, humans don't have the technology and... half the paper... and the quality of life for children. A large consequence of the use of genetic modification, shown in the film Gattaca, is the prejudice that can exist against those who do not have genetic modifications. To create an idea of what the consequences of genetic modification will be, a real world example would be racism and the use of eugenics to justify prejudice against those who are not light skinned or of Caucasian descent. Neo-eugenics is a very controversial topic that has many possible benefits and consequences and will influence many generations to come.
