Topic > Hindu Identity and Communal Hindu Identity

Vivekananda preached an inclusive Hinduism where all paths are included within the Hindu fold, as ultimately there is a higher truth. He expresses an inclusive form of religiosity by saying that “Religion is not in doctrines… it is in being and becoming”. Vivekananda had a modern view of the idea of religion where there was religious tolerance, freedom and acceptance. He advocates the preservation of religious identity and against conversion from a religious community. Vivekanada states how “The Christian must not become a Hindu or a Buddhist [and vice versa]… each must assimilate the spirit of others and yet preserve his own individuality.” Although he preaches that every individual should preserve his or her individuality, Vivekananda lays emphasis on remaining within the folds of the religious community into which an individual is born. Another interpretation of his statement could be that each religious community should preserve its separate and individualistic character instead of merging elements (he could have been referring to religious fluidity on the local level)
