Business intelligence (BI) is ubiquitous; it is widespread throughout the world and is applied in almost every information technology and business department. The advent of BI has helped organizations around the world overcome many of the constraints, pressures and challenges they have faced for years. There are several methodologies and principles in place that are used to make sense of huge amounts of raw data in organizations and convert it to useful information. There are numerous business intelligence techniques adopted by organizations to achieve meaningful purpose from their raw data/information. BI software applications and tools are used by business organizations to customize their needs or requirements. Some of the most common methods or capabilities of BI technologies are data warehousing, data mining, online analytical processing, reporting, and analytics (Mulcahy, n.d.). In the beginning, enterprise applications were independent of each other and difficult to access from a common, simple platform. Many departments relied on data automation, but they were not integrated as a single unit. As a result, data or information started accumulating from different databases and organizations used different systems to back up their functions (GravicShadowbase, 2013). The value of this mountain of information was soon recognized by business organizations who attempted to develop a new unified system capable of organizing, interpreting and transforming information; this is how the concept of data warehousing as part of business intelligence was born. Since then, organizations have been using one or more BI tools to meet their needs.
