The idea that marriage can only be between a man and a woman is an antiquated belief. While we understand and sympathize with the concern that same-sex marriage will change the traditional definition of marriage, people must come to realize that same-sex unions have no effect on heterosexual relationships. People may argue about rights, family life or religion, making a strong argument, but ultimately, no argument is as strong as that of equality. Marriage is a celebration of life and love that should be available to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. Gay marriage is a civil rights issue. Jennifer Hamady wrote: “Marriage, as an institution, has evolved greatly over the course of human history.” Not long ago, marriage involved having stay-at-home wives, with the male being the “bread bearer,” but that is no longer the case. Not only has marriage evolved into a more equal union, but many women are also taking on the role of primary earner. Likewise, marriage could evolve on its own between a man and a woman to same-sex couples. ProCon.org states that marriage, among many other things, is "one of man's fundamental civil rights" and that same-sex marriages should be viewed similarly and given the same protection as interracial marriages. In 2012, the NAACP called same-sex marriage “one of the major civil rights struggles of our time,” and just like other civil rights issues of the past, we must learn to accept and move past it. Marriage constitutes certain rights. From a legal perspective, marital rights should apply to same-sex couples, allowing them to obtain the same benefits such as tax deductions, insurance and recognition of their union. This includes the recognition of rights as part of your “family” du...... middle of paper ...... many religions and beliefs have been persecuted throughout history but in these circumstances religious people act as persecutors. Who are we to judge? Who are we to create boundaries for others? Same-sex relationships should not be limited because they are different, or strange, in some eyes. George Clooney said: “At some point in our lifetimes, gay marriage will no longer be an issue, and everyone who opposed this civil right will look as obsolete as George Wallace standing on the school steps blocking James Hood to enter the University of Alabama. because he was black." Change is inevitable. Gay rights have already grown and become more inclusive, and no religious beliefs, family concerns, or civil rights issues will stop them from growing further. Love is love and marriage is the best way to put it, which is why it should be open to everyone.
