Mark KuklisGB 215 – 004Two 3/24/14Leadership Interview and ReflectionThere are two kinds of people in this world: those who lead and those who follow. But a leader is nothing without his followers, so what kind of person is really more important? Leadership today is determined not by authority, but rather by influence. So, to take the first step towards becoming a successful leader you must first appeal to those around you and gain followers. Once you have followers, set a goal for the group, because how effective you are as a leader is measured by your ability to achieve these goals. For the past five years I have been fortunate to have a job as a tennis instructor for Scituate Youth Center. The Scituate Youth Center is a non-profit organization that offers various clinics and sports programs to anyone between the ages of four and seventeen. It has been in existence for over 40 years and currently has over 2,000 children participating in its programs. Each program is run primarily by high school and college aged individuals under the leadership of the head athletic director. The executive board members of this organization are all unpaid volunteers responsible for facilitating programs and are ultimately the main reason why the organization has had such a large impact on the community. One of the key leadership positions for this organization is the athletic director, which is currently occupied by Mike Merritt. As athletic director he is directly responsible for monitoring all programs and making sure everything goes according to plan. This means being in charge of over 100 employees and ensuring they do their jobs well. Mike is also quite a keen tennis player... middle of the paper... and I hope everything goes well in the end." I consider this answer to be the most realistic answer he could have given. Of course he could have said that the youth center should raise prices for increase the budget, but he knows that the price increase might dissuade some kids from the program, which is the last thing he wants to do. He would rather just stick with the lower-quality equipment and employees and make do with them. more? Then I asked him if the youth center has ever considered asking for donations to fund its funding, and if so, what happened? He responded by stating that the youth center has indeed received donations in the past from various individuals, none of whom however are large enough to have a lasting impact on the organization Although they “helped alleviate some of the problems at the time.”
