Race has had a major impact on our society in every single aspect of our lives. Racism is brought to an even larger scale in a sporting context. Emotions run high and people say things about others without thinking. This is not something that has just started to happen; these things have been happening for many, many years. Sports brings out a completely different type of person, be it the player or even the fan. Whatever it is, both have a significant impact on the way racism is involved in sports. Racism 70 years ago was a very difficult time for African American culture. Then “the only difference between the black man who shines shoes in the ghetto and the black sprinter is that the shoe shiner is a nigger and the sprinter is a fast nigger”. (counterpunch.com) The world of sports is more diverse than before, but has it really changed? The sports industry may have allowed blacks to start playing sports, but the racism within the sport is still exactly the same. Between Muhammad Ali and Richard Sherman the changes that were made were not significant enough to make the black community in sports feel 100% accepted. There are multiple reasons why I believe there is still racism in the world of sports and that it is still the same as it was back then. My main points in this regard are insults, discrimination and stereotypes. First I'll start with the insults. During the 1960s, an African American athlete was greeted everywhere he went with a negative name. Perry Wallace, the Vanderbilt star offensive player who became the first black college player in the all-white Southeastern Conference in 1967-68, recalls: "I'm talking about racial things, people threatening your life ... calling you nigger, 'coon ,'" shoe polish." The first... half of the card... asked him to play defensive end rather than quarterback, his natural position.(newsone) This has been a constant struggle in the football world. The judging aspect of sports because of the color has not changed in the last 60 years. I believe that racism in sports has changed slightly but not to the extent that I believe it is where it should be. I believe that sports is still very negative towards minorities and should clean up multiple things including my main points: insults, discrimination and stereotypes. These three things are a very important aspect in sport in my opinion because they would not only influence the way sport is played, but I also believe they would change the way our society views the others. Racism in the world of sport is still present starting from Muhammad Ali in the 1960s, up to today with Richard Sherman in the 1960s. 2010..
