It's been just over a century since the Royal Mail steamship Titanic (I'll call her Titanic from now on) shocked the world twice in the same week. She was photographed in all her glory as passengers boarded her for her maiden voyage to America and the port of New York City. The ship which was hailed as unsinkable on April 10, 1912, had safety precautions such as waterproof rooms, lifeboats, and other ways to survive a problem if there was one; however, the Titanic actually encountered a problem. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and docked there, two miles below the surface, taking with it over 1,500 lives. There is evidence to show that the Titanic was doomed to flaws and human failure. Beauty to the core, because paint, polish and a smile were no match for an iceberg. A watertight compartment is beautiful if it works.. The 15 "watertight compartments or bulkheads" may have been the Titanic's biggest design flaw. Their function was to trap water in the event of a hull perforation, prevent the ship from completely flooding and make it float. The compartments were “watertight” but not closed so that “water could escape from one compartment to another.” The result was that too many compartments filled with water and the Titanic sank. (History.com Staff “Titanic's Fatal Flaws”) Eventually evacuations were ordered; women and children first on lifeboats. There is beauty and safety in numbers when it comes to lifeboats. After a suggestion, a new, larger lifeboat storage crane was installed allowing the Titanic to carry up to 64 lifeboats, (Titanic Archive/Lifeboats) however the Titanic only had 20.
