I am interested in exploring the mutually shaping relationship between technology and society through an integrated development perspective. During my postgraduate study in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the University of Edinburgh, I followed the mutual modeling route and briefly touched on integrated development issues in two research papers, “Understanding Local Circumstances of Surveillance on ICT Applications in China” and “The Mutual Shaping History of Agricultural Technology, Social Condition, And Public Policy in China”. By applying for the doctoral project "Innovation, society and politics in China: towards integrated development", I wish to extend my knowledge and research to the mutually shaping relationship between technological innovation, state and society building and public policies in the past, China present and future through an integrated development perspective and case studies. A nascent but promising integrated development perspective, as Susan Cozzens has pointed out, is to move three different perspectives on development, conflict power analysis from STS, state economic growth studies from new growth theory, and state economic growth studies entrepreneurial learning and building skills from innovation. systems, towards development as freedom in Amartya Sen's definition. Over the next decade or more, China will undergo a structural transformation in development mode to address social and economic problems arising from its exclusive focus on economic growth and national competence. I therefore find my research interesting and timely in both the academic and real worlds. I have the precious opportunity to pursue my PhD of research. in your department. Finally, I must confess that my undergraduate score in Edinburgh was not excellent. Although I expressed good logical reasoning and analytical skills and knowledge as tutor Francesca Bray commented, my inadequate language skills and overly ambitious planning of research projects led to a not so good presentation. To address the problem, I never stop practicing English and project planning skills by reading more academic books after graduation. The experience working on a real set also taught me how to evaluate, plan and lead a project under time and resource constraints. I believe I am more capable than before of managing a doctoral research. I believe that a brash but brilliant and passionate young scholar should be given the opportunity to pursue his dream studies. I think you believe it too. Thank you!
