A current OSH concern in my industry is the recognition of physical hazards, particularly slips, falls and extreme temperatures. HRM has an OH&S program that outlines our company's policies and procedures. The program includes education and training, personal protective equipment, equipment and vehicle safety, wildlife encounters, fires and spills, medical emergencies and more. HR ensures that everyone has taken risk awareness and fall prevention courses and has a valid first aid ticket before going to work. Once on the job site, the field manager takes a walk-through and field orientation so everyone knows the potential hazards of the site, how to properly use their PPE, and what to do in the event of a near miss or accident.• When deals with slips, strains and falls, it is important that employees have the correct PPE, including fall arrest harnesses and the correct footwear.• The HRM must not only ensure that employees receive these items and know how to use them correctly, but that they are used. The importance of proper lifting also needs to be addressed. • Supervisors should be trained in proper ergonomics so they can correct/instruct employees on how to work safely. • Our company has implemented a pre-start stretching program where everyone does a group stretch at the start of the work day. The activity is included in the paid working day and is mandatory. Free time due to strains and sprains has become almost non-existent. Extreme Temperatures • Extreme temperatures are a hazard that can be very difficult to avoid and can easily lead to heat stress. Heat stress can cause heat stroke, tiredness, cramps and rashes. • Heat can...... center of paper ......stress, diversity and discrimination or harassment in the workplace, violence and bullying. Human Resources must comply with government legislation and for this reason they are actively involved in the administration and facilitation of OSH programmes. They are involved in accident/incident recording and reporting, disability management, workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs. Workers and employers share responsibility for health and safety, and human resources helps them work together in this effort. The benefit of creating a safe and healthy working environment is not only to protect workers, but also to reduce costs, maintain productivity and promote employee loyalty, with long-term benefits for the company. www.worksafebc.com/publications www.ccohs.ca www.iapa.ca/sbc http://www.healthandsafetycentre.org/sc/calculator/default.htm www.kaltire.comwww.tolko.com
